MILLSTONE – Municipal officials in Millstone Township have conveyed a property on Stagecoach Road to a nonprofit corporation that will provide 10 affordable housing units for senior citizens.
On Aug. 7, Township Committee members authorized the conveyance of the 2.4-acre lot at 471 Stagecoach Road to the Affordable Housing Alliance (AHA), Neptune, a nonprofit corporation that works with municipalities in several counties to assist with affordable housing compliance.
Affordable housing is defined as housing that is sold or rented at below market rates to individuals and families whose income meets certain guidelines.
The lot was purchased by municipal officials with a $150,000 bond ordinance in 2016. The parcel is near the Allen House, which is a building with 10 affordable housing units for seniors, and the Millstone Community Center.
According to a proposed settlement agreement between Millstone and the Fair Share Housing Center, the affordable housing project at 471 Stagecoach Road will be known as the Allen House II and also consist of 10 affordable rental apartments for senior citizens.
The Fair Share Housing Center, Cherry Hill, advocates for the development of affordable housing throughout New Jersey.
According to the settlement agreement, Millstone’s current affordable housing obligation is 231 units, which the township has met through having credit for 232 units.
The township’s fair share housing plan is currently pending before state Superior Court, according to the resolution.
If the settlement agreement is approved by a judge, municipal officials will be required to adopt a housing element and fair share plan consistent with the terms of the agreement and amend the Millstone’s affordable housing ordinance and zoning ordinance to implement the terms of the settlement agreement and its zoning.
If the settlement agreement is rejected by a judge, it will become null and void. Either decision may be appealed, according to the agreement.
