Kuberiet named acting Middlesex County prosecutor

Christopher L. C. Kuberiet has been named acting Middlesex County prosecutor, after Andrew C. Carey was appointed as the Attorney-in-Charge for the Camden branch of the U.S. Attorney’s Office.

Kuberiet was sworn in on Sept. 3 by the Honorable Alberto Rivas.

Thereafter, all prosecutors, investigators and detectives were similarly sworn in as acting deputy attorney generals and acting investigators, according to information provided by the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office.

Kuberiet’s prosecutorial career began in 1990 when he was sworn in as a Middlesex County assistant prosecutor by the Honorable Herman L. Breitkopf. He was first assigned to the Juvenile Unit. He thereafter held assignments in the Sex Crimes Unit, the Gang and Career Criminal Unit, and the Major Crimes Unit, and served as a trial team leader and zone prosecutor. He has served as section chief of the Juvenile Unit and the Major Crimes Unit, according to the statement.

In January 2011, Kuberiet was elevated to deputy first assistant prosecutor by Prosecutor Bruce Kaplan, and was promoted again in 2013 to first assistant prosecutor by Carey. For the past eight years, Kuberiet has supervised more than 200 staff members.

Over almost three decades of service, Kuberiet has prosecuted and tried a wide range of crimes including murders, aggravated sexual assaults, armed robberies, kidnappings, drug cases and juvenile matters, according to the statement.

He was born and raised in Middlesex County. He attended Albright College and graduated from Rutgers Law School. Afterward, he served as a law clerk to the Honorable David G. Lucas in Somerset County.

Kuberiet has received numerous professional awards and honors over the course of his career, including, most recently, the 2017 Attorney General’s Excellence Award for Victim Justice in recognition of his commitment to ensuring the criminal justice system treats victims with compassion and dignity; and the 2017 Friend of Student Assistance Professionals of New Jersey for outstanding dedication and service to students and families in New Jersey.
