Known as fidget quilts, twiddle muffs and comfort mitts, certain quilts typically feature items such as zippers, buttons, bows, jewelry and elastic, which are meant to provide tactile stimulation.
People living with dementia often fiddle with objects. The quilts help evoke memories for some people. Some are decorated with odds and ends like buttons, bells and ribbons. The idea is for the wearer to have something with which to fidget.
The Monroe Township Public Library will hold a Fidget Quilt/Twiddle Muff Kickoff Event from 1-4 p.m. on Oct. 5 to create at least 20 quilts/muffs to donate to residents in Monroe. Anyone age 12 and older is invited to participate.
Supplies will be available for attendees to sew, knit and/or assemble pieces in the library. Patterns and a limited number of kits will be available to take home.
Through Dec. 16, the library collect completed quilts to donate to Parker Adult Day Center in Monroe.
The Monroe Township Public Library is located at 4 Municipal Plaza.
