A leader in the Princeton Community Democratic Organization said Thursday that he is “strongly considering” running for Princeton Council this year.
Amner Deleon, the vice president of the PCDO, said he would make up his mind in two weeks whether to enter the race, in what is a growing field on the Democratic side for the two seats up for grabs. Already, incumbent Councilwoman Jenny Crumiller has said she plans to run for re-election to her seat, while former Princeton school board president Tim Quinn has announced that he plans to run for council.
The wildcard is incumbent Councilman Patrick Simon, who is mulling whether to run for mayor against incumbent and fellow Democrat Liz Lempert.
Mr. Deleon is originally from Guatemala but grew up in Princeton, going through the public school system. If elected, he would be the first Latino to serve in municipal government.
In terms of where he stands within the divided Democratic party, Mr. Deleon supported former Township Committeewoman Sue Nemeth and Councilman Bernard P. Miller in the hotly contested 2014 primary against fellow Democrat, Councilwoman Jo S. Butler.
Aside from his role with the PCDO, Mr. Deleon sits on the municipal traffic and transportation committee — an advisory board to the Princeton Council.
