The students at Hillsborough Elementary School demonstrated the character trait of caring for the month of February by helping out the local food bank.
Each class was assigned a different item to bring so that the class could compile Birthday Bags for children in need who otherwise might not have a birthday celebration.
Items that were donated included birthday plates, cups and napkins, as well as party hats, blowers, cake mix, and frosting. Gift bags were donated by the teachers as well. The safety patrol students collected and sorted the donations.
The initiative for the Birthday Bags came from Ellen Stem, the school guidance counselor, who also runs the School Climate Committee. She suggested the idea and teachers Tracy Lauri and Kim Wright co-chaired the activity. Jessica Fox, the school librarian, also played an integral part in the project.
After the items were collected and sorted, the students in Mrs. Lauri’s third grade class and Mrs. Wright’s fourth grade class assembled the bags. In total, more than 50 bags were donated to the Hillsborough Food Bank.
