SAVE hosts Best in Show, its annual benefit gala
SAVE, A Friend to Homeless Animals, is hosting Best in Show, its 16th Annual Gala Benefit, at the Princeton Airport from 6 until 11 p.m. on Saturday, May 14,
The festive evening of cocktails and dinner, featuring a live and silent auction, dancing, and a 50/50 raffle is expected to attract 275 guests. Proceeds from the gala will support the shelter’s six core programs of Rescue, Shelter, Adoption, Health and Welfare, Spay/Neuter, and Humane Education. Corporate sponsors include The Animal Hospital at Kingston and Blawenburg, Bloomberg, Callaway Henderson Sotheby’s International Realty, The Dittmar Agency, and Whole Earth Center.
Recently, SAVE moved to its new headquarters and shelter in Skillman. The state-of-the-art facilities provide the animals in residence with the best temporary home while they await adoption. A nonprofit shelter, SAVE is dedicated to protecting the health and well being of companion animals in the greater Skillman and Princeton areas. SAVE strives to substantially reduce animal overpopulation and the corresponding euthanasia of adoptable dogs and cats.

Princeton presents sixth annual Wheels Rodeo
This year, The Princeton Police and Princeton Human Services will host the sixth annual Wheels Rodeo 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, May 14 (rain date May 15 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.), at the Community Park Pool Parking lot located at 400 Witherspoon St. Princeton.
The event is open to all Princeton residents and is free of charge. It will include a bicycle safety check, free helmets for children, a road course and free skin cancer screening. There will be free refreshments for participants: hot dogs and cold bottled water, provided by McCaffrey’s Supermarkets and pizza provided by Princeton Pi. A brand new bicycle and a Community Park Pool family membership will be raffled.
Members of the Princeton Police Department, Princeton Fire Department and Princeton First Aid Squad will also display various emergency tools and equipment. Feel free to bring unwanted bicycles for donation to the Trenton Boys and Girls Club Bike Exchange.

The Community Park School PTO will also run a car wash at the school from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, May 14. All proceeds raised will go towards the 5th Grade Class Gift to the school; $5 per car wash, and donations are also welcomed.
UCC will hold annual super-sized Spring Sale
The Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Princeton will hold its annual super-sized Spring Sale from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, May 14, at 50 Cherry Hill Road, at the junction with Route 206, in Princeton.
All proceeds from the sale benefit local charitable organizations providing emergency food, shelter, education and other services in Mercer County. Recipients include: Trenton Area Soup Kitchen, HomeFront, the Crisis Ministry of Princeton and Trenton, and Womanspace. Buyers have the rare opportunity to support worthwhile charities while acquiring bargains. For environmentalists, this is a mega opportunity for recycling previously used goods.
There will be live music featuring the UU Princeton Congregation’s own Oompah Band and other local musicians to accompany diners in outdoor dining areas where shoppers can enjoy hamburgers and hot dogs or head inside to enjoy other spring treats such as fresh fruit or salad.
New this year is also a bistro space serving coffee and gourmet baked goods where shoppers can relax while enjoying live acoustic music.
The Spring Sale takes up the entire building and grounds, set up boutique-style, showcasing high-quality clothing for men and women, shoes and accessories, linens, furniture, antiques, books and DVDs, toys and games, computers, jewelry, art pieces, posters and paintings, boutique items such as crystal and porcelain figurines, sporting goods, plants and flowers, general household items, and other values.
Princeton 5K race presents Team Challenge
The sixth annual Princeton 5K road race will take place on Sunday, May 15, at 8:30 a.m.
This USATF-sanctioned fast, flat course winds through the heart of Princeton.
Presented by Princeton Pacers Running, this event benefits the Princeton High School cross country and track and field teams.
New this year is the Team Challenge, with awards given to the fastest combined top three finishers and largest teams.

Democrats to discuss refugee crisis
A panel will discuss the international refugee crisis and local responses to it at the Princeton Community Democratic Organization’s monthly meeting.
The meeting runs from 7 to 9 p.m. on Sunday, May 15, at the Suzanne Patterson Center, 45 Stockton St., behind Monument Hall in Princeton with free parking available.
Speakers will include Louise Sandburg and Melissa Hager of the Princeton Jewish Center, Karen Longo-Baldwin of the Princeton United Methodist Church, and Homaira Khandakar from the local Ahmadi community who can tell her own story and that of a new family that fled to the United State because of persecution in their own land.
The event is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served. Doors will open at 7 p.m. The program will begin promptly at 7:30 p.m.
Princeton SCORE sets business workshop series
The Princeton SCORE chapter is offering its 20th Start SMART workshop beginning on May 25. So far 237 entrepreneurs and small business owners have participated in the chapter’s 19 previous workshops.
Princeton SCORE chapter chairman John Biancamano leads the StartSMART sessions, which serves business owners, entrepreneurs and startups in Mercer and Middlesex counties.
The value comes from professional business people with real-world business experience who offer guidance on everything from financial and business plans to marketing strategies, funding and beyond.
The next five-session StartSMART workshop begins with Small Business/Startup Basics. Subsequent sessions follow on June 8 (Business Concept and Market Research); June 22 (Small Business Marketing); July 6 (Financial Management); and July 20 (Funding Sources and Next Steps). Sessions will be held from 5:45 p.m. to 8:45 p.m. at Pellettieri, Rabstein & Altman Law Offices, 100 Nassau Park Boulevard, Suite 111, Princeton.
