A re-dedication of the Civil War Monument at the Brainerd Cemetery, 22 N. Main St., Cranbury will be held at 10:30 a.m. by the N.J. Civil War History Association, re-enacting as the 14th N.J. Volunteer Regiment, Company H. The re-dedication service will include the unveiling of a new smaller monument, adjacent to the original, with the names of the 70 soldiers that are listed on the 1866 Civil War Soldiers Monument.
The Annual Hightstown-East Windsor Memorial Day Parade will start on Stockton Street at 9 a.m. and will proceed through the center of town at approximately 9:30 a.m., finishing at the VFW on Dutch Neck Road. The grand marshals for this year’s parade will be Joel McKay of Hightstown and Alvin Miller of East Windsor. The event will honor the veterans with five wreaths placed throughout the parade route. Everyone is invited to attend and show support for all veterans.
The Hightstown Animal Welfare Committee is taking Paws Walk to a new level. This year, dogs will be walking in the Memorial Day Parade in Hightstown. Participants are asked to gather in the field at the VFW on Dutch Neck Road by 10 a.m. Red-white-blue decorated bones will be available on a first come basis while treats last. Dogs must be walked by an adult, and on a 6-foot leash. Water bowls are provided along the route. Themed dog kerchiefs are available for purchase at the Animal Welfare table on the VFW field. Beth El Synagogue of East Windsor Genealogy Club will present Art Finkle and a discussion on the Jewish Community that settled into the Trenton area at 7:30 p.m. Art is the chair of the Trenton Jewish Historical Society and will delve into the immigrant periods of a displaced people adapting to a completely new environment. He will highlight Trenton’s institutions, its work and its eventual economic success, and explore the second generation Russian community along with the older and smaller German Jewish community. Trenton is one of many small cities that served as havens for Jewish refugees who came to the land of opportunity to eventually achieve the American dream. Art also plans to highlight the history of Beth El Synagogue, whose congregation dates back to 1906.
