HILLSBOROUGH: Plaza comes alive with trees, rain garden

Attendees at Saturday’s Memorial Day parade will see a colorful natural look in front of the municipal building.
Over the last two weeks, 11 honey locust trees have been planted in the plaza in front of the main entrance. And flowers and shrubs should be planted in a newly dug “rain garden” to the east of the main plaza.
The improvements to the complex come as the township celebrates the 25th year of the complex, now named after one of its main proponents, Peter J. Biondi, who was mayor at the time.
Lifetime Hillsborough resident and retired Air Force Lt. Col. Fred Quick will lead Memorial Day commemoration ceremonies on Saturday.
Mr. Quick joined the Air Force in 1953 and retired as a lieutenant colonel in 1981. He flew cargo plans from Dover Air Force Base to various places throughout the world.
Mr. Quick will lead the parade, which begins at 10:30 a.m. at the corner of Auten and Triangle roads. The route will proceed from Auten Road onto New Amwell to Beekman Lane, and into the municipal complex and the Garden of Honor.
Mr. Quick will be the featured speaker at the ceremony, which should begin about 11:15 a.m.
Hillsborough veterans will start the day at the annual “Salute to Veterans” breakfast, which starts at 7:30 a.m. in the municipal building. Veterans will be bused to be in position to lead the parade at 10:30 a.m.
Each year more than 200 veterans, spouses and widows gather in the multipurpose room for a breakfast. A highlight is when veterans are invited to stand and speak into a microphone to proudly state the years and location of their military service.
Congressman Leonard Lance is expected to attend the breakfast, as are state legislative representatives.
“It is an honor to have the opportunity to recognize our veterans each year during the Memorial Day ceremonies,” said Mayor Frank DelCore.
The breakfast is held rain or shine. If it rains, the parade will be Sunday, May 29.
Drivers should be alert for road blockages around the parade route.
