HOPEWELL: Walking tour Saturday continues anniversary observance

Hopewell’s 125th anniversary celebration will continue on May 21 with a walking tour of the historic borough.
The Hopewell Public Library, in conjunction with the Hopewell Valley Historical Society, is offering a one-hour tour that begins in front of the library, on East Broad Street, at 11 am. It will include some history about many of the town’s oldest buildings and stories highlighting events from the past.
The history walk will be lead by local historian Jack Koeppel.
Pre-registration is required and participation will be limited.
The tour, part of Hopewell’s celebration of its incorporation in 1891, will begin with facts about how the tiny 18th century village was founded by the Baptists, who built the town’s centerpiece Old School Baptist Church, located on West Broad Street.
The tour will continue along West Broad Street, Mercer Street , Model Avenue and Railroad Place.
After going up Blackwell Avenue, the tour will end at the Hopewell Museum, East Broad Street. Facts, events and stories will be shared along the way. Other featured buildings will include some early taverns and two former schoolhouses. Attendees also will hear stories about current homes that have been around for a long time.
