Parent/child workshops in music/movement and art for children with autism or autistic behaviors will be held on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, July 20-Aug. 25, at Elks Lodge No. 324, New Brunswick. In addition, art workshops will be offered July 24-Aug. 28 at the College of St. Elizabeth, Morristown.
The program, now in its 20th year, is sponsored by VSA arts of New Jersey (VSA/NJ), a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing accessible arts opportunities to children and adults with disabilities.
The six weekly sessions will provide young people with experiences in music and art that will serve as an introduction to the arts while helping to develop communication, cognitive, social and motor skills. The arts provide an ideal medium for developing and retaining a wide array of skills for children with autism.
Young people ages 3-17 are welcome to participate. Classes are free of charge. Registration will be accepted on a first-come basis. Application deadline is July 11.
VSA/NJ is cosponsored by the Middlesex County Cultural and Heritage Commission. Funding has been made possible by the United Way of Central Jersey; the New Jersey State Council on the Arts/Department of State, a partner agency of the National Endowment for the Arts; and the central office of VSA, under an award from the U.S. Department of Education. VSA arts is an affiliate of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, Washington, D.C.
