A hot summer day at Community Park Pool last year ended in tragedy for 24-year-old Colin P. Simonelli, whose drowning death led his family to file a civil lawsuit that the town has quietly settled for $1.75 million.
The settlement, reported by NJ.com, resolved a litigation that Anthony Simonelli, his father, had brought in May 2017. The money is being paid by the town’s insurance carrier, according to the NJ.com report.
Anthony Simonelli and his son went to the pool on Aug.20, 2016, when a fellow swimmer, not a lifeguard, noticed Colin Simonelli unresponsive. It was later revealed he had drowned in 4 feet of water. He died a short time later.
Town officials, including Mayor Liz Lempert, could not be reached for comment. Simonelli’s lawyer, Neil S. Weiner, also could not be reached for comment.
