The Rev. Norman H. Nuding, 92, of Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, husband of Barbara Edmonds Nuding, died Saturday, March 25, 2017.
His Funeral Service will be held Saturday, April 1, 2017 at 3:00 p.m. in the Rodenberg Chapel (Franke at Seaside), 1885 Franke Drive. Interment will be at St. Peter’s Lutheran Churchyard, Pawleys Island, Tuesday, April 4, 2017 at 10:00 a.m. Arrangements by J. Henry Stuhr, Inc., Mount Pleasant Chapel.
Norman was born April 22, 1924, in Toledo, Ohio, son of the late Jacob Nuding and the late Marie Grifendorf Nuding. He was an Eagle Scout and served under General MacArthur as a cryptographic technician in the US Army during WWII in the Pacific Theater. Norman was a missionary to Japan from 1950-1967, where he founded Ichigaya Lutheran Church in Tokyo. He then served as the Director of Personnel for overseas missions of the Lutheran Church of America until his retirement. He next established Hidden Pines Farm in New Jersey, where he raised Christmas trees.
Norman enjoyed designing Japanese gardens, and was an avid golfer with two lifetime holes in one. He was formerly a member of St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Pawleys Island and currently a member of St. Mark’s Lutheran Church on the Isle of Palms.
In addition to his wife, Barbara, he is survived by four sons: Stephen C. Nuding, and his wife, Micki, of Charleston, SC, Timothy N. Nuding, of London, England, David A. Nuding, and his wife, Colette Koby, of Portland, OR, and Ned J. Nuding, and his wife, Brenda, of Kailua, HI; grandchildren: Jessica Schmalian, Amelia Brown, Elise Nuding, Emma Nuding, Liam Nuding, Natalie Nuding, Reece Nuding, and Eric Nuding; great-grandchildren: Gage Schmalian, and Canyon Brown; and his niece and nephew, Mary Ann Gould and Ronald Gould. He was preceded in death by his sister, Helen Gould.
