Epsom Derby 2017 winner raises the bar for this year’s edition

Advertorial
It might be ranked behind Cheltenham Festival and the Grand National for horse racing superiority, but the Epsom Derby has plenty to offer and is massively underrated. Last year’s edition of the famous Investec Derby saw a memorable run where the winner was a major outsider. Moments like this only add more reasoning behind why so many enjoy Epsom Derby Day every year, and it’s certainly more enticing to those who aren’t as knowledgeable on it.
If you’re looking for more information on anything to do with horse racing, The Winners Enclosure cover Epsom Derby Day as well as all other major areas of betting on horse racing, so they’re worth checking out for their regularly updated horse racing betting tips and an extensive knowledge of all the biggest events in the sport.

An odds defying winner at Epsom Downs

There wasn’t a set winner with an odds-on price for last year’s Epsom Derby race, leaving favourite as Cracksman at odds of 7/2, who was jockeyed by Frankie Dettori. When it came down to the race getting underway, Cracksman could only get as far as third, with the two 5/1 horses that followed in terms of odds then being deemed as expected favourites by default.
While 5/1 priced Cliffs of Moher managed to reach second, other 5/1 priced horse Eminent could only get as far as fourth, so the top spot was left wide open for one of the fifteen horses with a larger price, ranging from 8/1 to 100/1. Despite there being some more assumed suitors ahead of him, it was Wings Of Eagles that stole that first place position, beating all three favourites in the places below to win the Epsom Derby at 40/1 odds.
Unfortunately, Wings Of Eagles had to retire just under a month later after suffering a serious injury but the win on Epsom Derby day is the sort of memory that will last a lifetime, and it’ll certainly be something greatly appreciated by those punters lucky enough to back it at the original starting price.
We’re expecting more of the same this time around

As is to be expected, there being such a big winner in the last Epsom Derby Day will only add pressure to it being just as good this time around. It’s rare that you’ll find anyone saying they didn’t enjoy it though as it’s seen as one of the UK’s top racing events and always steps up to the plate.
For those who are preparing to bet on this year’s Epsom Derby, some of the more prepared bookmakers are already making prices available on each horse in contention, so any and all punters can back their own tips for The Derby well in advance.
