EAST BRUNSWICK – This fall, the Raritan Valley YMCA in East Brunswick continues to offer Silver Sneakers, an evidence-based physical activity program to increase the physical, mental and social functioning of older adults.
Research has shown that low-intensity physical activity performed on a regular basis can reduce pain, elevate mood and delay the onset of disability and reduce the likelihood of falls, chronic disease, dementia and depression, according to information provided by the Y. While the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that older adults get a minimum of 30 minutes of moderate exercise or strength training per day, less than one out of three American’s 65 and older meet these guidelines.
Silver Sneakers exercise classes include cardiovascular, strength-training, balance and flexibility exercises, and the fostering of strong social relationships between participants, according to the statement.
Weekly Silver Sneakers classes are offered. At 10 a.m. Monday, Wednesday and Friday, the class uses hand held weights and elastic tube bands to build cardiovascular and muscular endurance. At 10:50 a.m., the class is best for those new to exercise, with a variety of moves set to music focusing on increasing range of motion and building strength. A chair is used for seated exercise or standing support.
Classes are taught by trained and certified instructors.
There is no fee for Full Facility Wellness YMCA members. Some supplemental Medicare plans may cover the membership fee. Seniors over 65 may bring in their supplemental insurance card to check for coverage. Non-members are welcome for $10 per class.
No advance registration is required for Silver Sneakers classes other than membership or guest fees.
Raritan Valley YMCA is located at 144 Tices Lane, East Brunswick.
