During this time before an election, there are many days when we all experience the worst of people instead of the best. I am appalled by what I read, hear and see, whether it’s about the national scene, state, town or school board. Isn’t this the time when candidates share their visions, experience, knowledge and good character?
When I taught in the Bronx, New York, I tried to engage my students in activities, which explored how similar we are and at the same time respect each others’ points of views in a respectful way, even if they are different from our own. Spending lots of money to get name recognition doesn’t tell you what the candidates believe in; it just shows the public that they have money. We need to ask the right questions and not tolerate no answer. We need to fact check what candidates say to see if what they say is even feasible. We need to listen to all candidates to see how they present themselves and learn about their character.
I want representatives who are smart, diligent, respectful and respected. I feel as if the human race is succumbing to animalistic behaviors. Can’t we just be civil and agree to disagree?
