SOUTH RIVER–Republican candidates Donna Balazs and Anthony Ciulla have seemingly won the council race in South River against Democratic incumbents John Alai and Julie Meira during elections on Nov. 5.
Ciulla received 1,276 votes/26% and Balazs recorded 1,228 votes/25%, winning the two open seats, each having a three-year term.
Alai received 1,152 votes/23%, Meiria received 1,148 votes/23%, and independent candidate Lewis Glogower-Lopez received 133 votes/3%.
Election results are according to the Middlesex County Board of Elections and are unofficial until certified.
Balazs has been a resident of the borough for 52 years. She was the first woman to be elected to the Borough Council, serving from 1992-99. She served a term as mayor from 1999-2000, finishing the term of the prior mayor. She was the borough’s first female mayor.
Ciulla is a lifelong resident and former councilman who served on the council in 2000, 2015 and 2016.
