Middlesex County College responds to coronavirus; part-time staffer tests positive

Middlesex County College (MCC) has taken a number of steps recently to combat the spread of coronavirus, including:

  • Instituting additional cleaning and disinfecting protocols and increased the frequency of such cleaning on high-touch surfaces in high-traffic areas
  • Extending Spring Break through March 17, after which all instruction is now being delivered online at least through March 31 (to be re-evaluated on an ongoing basis)
  • Reminding all employees to wash their hands well and frequently, cover when they cough or sneeze, stay home when they are sick, and substitute a smile for a handshake
  • Implementing additional social-distancing policies, including suspension or cancellation of all on-campus activities and meetings
  • Suspending all athletic programs for the remainder of the season
  • Suspending all College-sponsored travel

In recent days, the college had planned to move all employees except for those employees who are essential to the health, safety, and welfare of the college community to a fully remote work schedule beginning March 23, according to information provided by MCC on March 19.

The college has learned that a part-time staff member, who was last on the Edison campus on March 5, has tested positive for COVID-19. This is the first confirmed case at MCC. The staff member is now self-quarantined at home in accordance CDC protocols and is reportedly doing well, according to the statement.

Based on established MCC protocols and guidance from health authorities, persons who may have had direct contact with this individual are being contacted and provided with additional guidance. MCC will undertake appropriate disinfection and sanitation protocols.

MCC has moved to remote operations, effective immediately.

Information about how to contact MCC offices and access student support services virtually during remote operations will be posted at www.middlesexcc.edu. Plans for resuming on-campus operations will also be posted to the website as soon as they are available.
