The Greater Somerset County YMCA now offers a series of virtual fitness opportunities to keep communities strong and healthy throughout the ongoing pandemic.
A highlight of the series is the Greater Somerset County YMCA Virtual 5K Run/Walk. Participants will run or walk either at home on a treadmill or any location within Somerset County that respects social distancing from May 30 to June 6, any time of day. Participants can track their distance and time using running apps and upload their time and photos online using #GSCYMCA5K.
The event is free, but donations to the Y’s Financial Assistance Program are welcome. Registration is at gscymca.org/virtual5k.
“Our virtual 5K Run/Walk is a great way for people to work out, challenge themselves and help support their community all while maintaining social distance,” Greater Somerset County YMCA President and CEO David M. Carcieri said in a prepared statement. “At the Y, our mission is to strengthen community so we can be better together. The goal of our virtual 5K – and all our online fitness options – is to help our community stay active, connected, engaged and safe.”
Other Y virtual workout opportunities include:
YMCA LIVE: To help provide the community with daily home exercise, the Y is offering a series of live aerobic and strength-training classes led by Y group exercise instructors using Zoom video conferencing. The series is open to everyone, including those who aren’t members of the Y. Whether a participant wants to lose weight, maintain cardio health, build strength or do all of the above, workouts are available for all fitness goals. View the schedule of classes at gscymca.org/live.
Healthy at Home: A collection of archived workout videos led by Y instructors to keep members healthy even when they can’t get to a Y branch. The collection is free and open to non-members who have always been curious about joining the Y. Workouts include strength and conditioning, cardio, stretch and relaxation routines, and senior fitness.
LIVESTRONG at the YMCA: The program, which supports cancer survivors and their families, has pivoted to an online format every Monday at 3 p.m. and Thursday at 5 p.m. The meetings offer connection, conversation and community to all who attend. It is open to all past, present and potential LIVESTRONG at the YMCA participants.
