South River council introduces bond ordinance funding $1M in capital improvements

SOUTH RIVER–Ranging from roadway repairs to roof replacements, the Borough Council introduced a bond ordinance, which if adopted, will help finance $1 million worth of capital improvements.

The improvements authorized consist of improvements to various roads including, but not limited to, First Street, Claremont Avenue, Obert Street, Clayton Court, Gordon Street, and Wilcox Avenue; and roof replacement for municipal buildings, according to the council.

The council introduced the $399,000 bond ordinance, which if adopted will help paid for $1 million in various capital improvements. The second and final reading is scheduled for Sept. 14.

In order to pay for the $1 million in various capital improvements, the borough will use $580,000 in grant funds expected to be received from the New Jersey Department of Transportation, and the borough will also pay the remaining balance of $21,000, according to the council.

In other news, the council approved a resolution authorizing CME Associates to provide engineering services for the Willett Avenue Substation this year’s annual maintenance, as outlined in the borough engineer’s letter dated Aug. 18, which includes:

  • prepare bid documents and specifications for $13,860
  • bid phase services for $4,160
  • construction administration phase services for $23,250

The total cost for CME Associates to perform engineering services for the Willett Avenue Substation 2020 annual maintenance will be $41,270, according to the council.

“The substation redistributes electric power that the borough has bought on the grid and is transmitted to South River by PSE&G,” Londensky said. “The substation then distributes that electric by transformers that redirect that power to sections of the borough.”

With the substation located on Willett Avenue, Londensky said that construction will begin as soon as it can be scheduled with the vendor.
