An Edison man was charged on Sept. 2 with the murder of a 41-year-old Perth Amboy man on Aug. 23 in Perth Amboy.
Robert Hagens, 42, of Edison, was charged with the murder of Vidal Carrasquillo-Vasquez, according to information provided by Middlesex County Prosecutor Yolanda Ciccone and Chief Roman McKeon of the Perth Amboy Police Department.
Hagens was also charged with possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, and unlawful possession of a weapon, both second degree crimes.
He was previously charged on Aug. 24 with conspiracy to possess cocaine, according to reports.
The charges were filed following an investigation by Detective Frank Cristiano of the Perth Amboy Police Department and Detective Mark Morris of the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office.
The investigation began on Aug. 23 at approximately 11:34 p.m., when Perth Amboy police responded to a 911 call regarding a one vehicle crash at the intersection of Hall Avenue and High Street. Upon arrival, officers reportedly observed that the driver of the vehicle, Carrasquillo-Vasquez, appeared to be suffering from several gunshot wounds, according to the statement. The victim was transported to Staten Island University Hospital and was subsequently pronounced deceased.
Hagens was being held at the Middlesex County Adult Correction Center pending a detention hearing, as of press time.
