Virtual happy hours include discussion on St. Michaels Preserve, Aunt Chubby’s in Hopewell

D&R Greenway will hold free virtual happy hours via Zoom.

Experience Dr. Elisabeth Kloner’s stories about the 13 acres of East Amwell land in her family for a century, which she recently donated to D&R Greenway for permanent preservation from 5-6 p.m. Nov. 12.

Dr. Kloner will talk about the saga that occurred during the nearby Lindbergh kidnapping. In 1932, after the Lindbergh baby was kidnapped from his nearby home, law enforcement officers were authorized to search all of the barns and garages in the immediate area after a report that the kidnapper’s automobile bore out-of-state license plates.

Also on Nov. 12, Otto Zizak, farm-to-table restaurateur, will share his vision of a sustainable lifestyle and his farm-to-table restaurant ottoburger, which opened in October at 21 Broad St. in the town of Hopewell.

A special Thanksgiving happy hour, “First Year Harvest: St. Michaels Victory Gardens,” will be held from 5-6 p.m. Nov. 19.

Individual garden plots, 10 feet apart, were created on D&R Greenway’s St. Michaels Farm Preserve by Manager Bill Flemer just after the COVID pandemic began, designed to address food security and community-building in a time of challenge. Flemer will talk about bringing the dream of community gardens into reality by plowing the soil, adding compost, and providing a water tank for irrigation and sanitation.

During this tenth anniversary year, seven plots were tended by volunteers to feed Hopewell families in need, with boxes of produce delivered weekly throughout the season to Aunt Chubby’s restaurant in Hopewell Borough. Hear from Liz Maziarz of Aunt Chubby’s discuss how the produce contributed to the success of their food relief efforts and find out how this partnership will expand in 2021.

Both happy hours are free, but registration is required in order to receive the Zoom link.
