Cheers & Jeers

By Damian Holbrook

Cheers to 9-1-1: Lone Star
for letting Jim Parrack (pictured) shine. While the True Blood vet has always been a solid player on the Fox drama, he really lit up the screen in the April 19 hour as his firefighter Judd Ryder battled fury, fear and his own guilt over the car wreck that left his wife Grace (Sierra McClain) clinging to life.

Cheers to The Conners
for its sobering take on substance abuse. On the April 21 episode of ABC’s rebooted reboot, Becky (Lecy Goranson, pictured, with John Goodman) came clean at rehab that she’d been using booze to deal with the motorcycle death of her husband Mark (late Roseanne regular Glenn Quinn). Her breakdown broke our hearts, but it also allowed Goranson to raise her game.

Jeers to Reality Shows in a Rush.
Married at First Sight. 90 Day Fiancé. One Week to Sell. Gordon Ramsay’s 24 Hours to Hell and Back (pictured). Sorry, but major relationships – and even renovations – should take a lot longer than the insanely accelerated timelines unscripted TV is feeding us.

Jeers to Hulu’s How I Met Your Mother spin-off, How I Met Your Father.
CBS didn’t want How I Met Your Dad back in 2014 and nobody is asking for it now … even with Younger’s Hilary Duff (pictured) attached. You know what we do want? The edgy Lizzie McGuire revival that Duff was supposed to star in on Disney+.
