Sayreville candidates will run unopposed in primary

SAYREVILLE – Two first-term Democratic incumbents and two Republican challengers are seeking two available three-year terms on the Sayreville Borough Council.

According to the borough clerk’s office, incumbent Democrats Kevin Dalina and Damon Enriquez are pursuing re-election to their three-year terms on the Borough Council, which will be on the ballot in the Nov. 2 race. Republicans Eunice Dwumfour and Joseph Sarpa have filed to represent the GOP in the election.

The candidates will appear on the ballot in their respective party’s primary on June 8. Both the Democrats and Republicans are unopposed for their party’s nomination.

Dwumfour and Sarpa could not be reached for comment.

Dalina, who is serving as council president in 2021, is the events manager at Middlesex County College and is also an adjunct professor in the history and social sciences department, focusing political science. He has been a member of the governing body since 2019.

“Since being elected, I have worked with my colleagues on the Borough Council to invest in our town’s infrastructure to pave roads in town while also keeping taxes stable for our residents.” Dalina said. “I am running because I want to continue our work and partnership with the [Middlesex] County Board of Commissioners and our legislative delegation to bring more funding to Sayreville.

“[This partnership includes] working with our state legislature to obtain Sayreville $1 million to further develop the Jerry Ust Recreation Facility on Bordentown Avenue,” he continued. “During the height of the coronavirus pandemic, we worked with the county to provide drive-through coronavirus testing at the police station and now we are able to provide coronavirus vaccinations at the fire academy.

“I am seeking re-election to the Borough Council to continue working toward making Sayreville better, to keep taxes stable and to ensure we can continue to offer the services and programs our residents value.”

Enriquez, as with Dalina, has been a member of the governing body since 2019. He is currently a longshoreman checker for APM Terminals in Port Elizabeth. Previously, Enriquez was a telecommunications technician.

“I am seeking re-election to continue the work I began with my other council members when I was first elected,” Enriquez said. “I just want to continue to make a difference in the betterment of this community. I need to make sure the concerns of the people of Sayreville are heard and responded to.

“We have already worked hard in stabilizing our taxes, allocating more of our tax money towards our roads and worked in concert with the county on bringing in more funding through grants for improvements to this town,” he said. “As when I first decided to run, I still have that passion to make Sayreville one of, if not the most desired places to live in all of Middlesex County. I plan on continuing to work hard to make that happen.”

Democrats hold five of the six Borough Council seats and the mayor’s office. Republicans hold one Borough Council seat.
