FAIR HAVEN – Republican Suzanne McCabe has joined the Fair Haven Borough Council and will fill an unexpired term through the end of the year.
Republican Councilman James Banahan resigned from the governing body in April.
Following Banahan’s resignation, officials from the local Republican Party submitted McCabe, Tracy Cole and Sheri D’Angelo as nominees to fill the vacancy.
Their names were presented to the council on May 24. Cole and D’Angelo were present at the meeting; McCabe was not in attendance.
After Cole and D’Angelo spoke about filling the vacant seat, Borough Council President Christopher Rodriguez nominated McCabe for the position. His motion was seconded by Councilman Michael McCue.
Rodriguez, McCue, Councilwoman Elizabeth Koch and Councilwoman Laline Neff voted “yes” on the motion. Councilwoman Meghan Chrisner-Keefe voted “no” on the motion. The 4-1 vote secured the seat for McCabe.
McCabe joined the council on June 14. Because the term that was initially won by Banahan will expire at the end of 2021, there will not be an unexpired term on the Nov. 2 general election ballot.
McCabe did not file a nominating petition to run for the seat in the general election and her service on the governing body will conclude in December.
Cole, Koch and Democrats Robert Gasperini and Sonja Trombino are seeking two available three-year council terms that will run from Jan. 1, 2022 through Dec. 31, 2024.
Democrats hold a 4-2 majority on the Borough Council.
