Metuchen’s St. Francis celebrating 40 years in diocese with inaugural Feast

METUCHEN – The public is invited to the inaugural Feast of Saint Francis Cathedral, an Italian street fair with a Metuchen twist.

The event will run from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Oct. 2 at the Cathedral of St. Francis of Assisi Campus, 548 Main St.

“It has long been the desire of many people in our community to design and execute a major event that would attract friends, family neighbors new and old to come together to enjoy the good things of life,” Rev. Timothy Christy said in a welcoming letter about the feast.

“This year we are celebrating our heritage of being a diocesan Cathedral for 40 years, serving not only a large local congregation, but also as the mother Church of the four central New Jersey counties of Middlesex, Somerset, Hunterdon and Warren. We are celebrating by opening our campus to the wider community as a gesture of welcome and good will.”

The Diocese of Metuchen was established Nov. 19, 1981, by Pope St. John Paul II.

The day will feature a spiritual kickoff – special mass, procession of the statue of St. Francis and blessing of animals – then food, music, entertainment, vendors, games, and a super 50/50 raffle are all planned.

“We will have all the traditional Italian foods that we have come to love at a festival, but also other delicious foods, desserts and beverages and a beer garden,” Christy said, adding there will be something for all ages.
