Town may move forward on park building

UPPER FREEHOLD – The township appears to be on the path to constructing a building at Reed Park, Route 526, after years of planning for a facility.

The building would include restrooms, an area from which dry concessions would be sold (no cooking) and storage space. Plans also include space for a parking lot with lights.

Reed Park was formerly a part of the Reed Sod Farm. At the present time the park is primarily used by local lacrosse teams.

“There’s nothing really there,” Township Engineer Patrick Jeffrey said about the current state of the property.

According to Jeffrey, last year the Township

Committee resolved to seek bids for the construction project.

The work that is planned was estimated to cost $1.2 million, with some financial assistance expected to be received from the Monmouth County Park System, he said.

A bond that was previously issued by the township is expected to pay for the work at Reed Park.

In March, the committee announced that four bids for the project had been received. Compass Construction was the apparent low bidder at $1.05 million, but Jeffrey said the contract has not been awarded yet.
