SOUTH BRUNSWICK — Longtime district teacher and former Mayor Vincent De Lucia started his new position this week.
The Board of Education unanimously appointed De Lucia as administrative assistant to Schools Superintendent Sam Stewart at its June 26 meeting.
The position pays $74,700 annually.
According to De Lucia, the new position will ad-dress several different areas, including working with teachers on improving instruction, supervising teachers, and acting as a communications liaison for the district.
"I’m very excited," De Lucia said during his first day of work at the district office on Wednesday.
"I hope to bring my skills and experience to a different level," he said.
De Lucia started teaching high school English in South Brunswick in 1972.
He then left the district in 1981 to work in the private sector for eight years.
De Lucia returned to the district as a teacher in 1989.
In 1994 De Lucia became a national board certified teacher and a staff aide of student affairs the next year.
De Lucia presently holds a master’s degree in instruction and is currently taking classes for a second master’s in supervision.
De Lucia said that with 100 new teachers entering the district next year, he will be busy and will be working with four teachers to help them become nationally certified.
"We are one of the training sites for the state," he said.
De Lucia said that he also serves as an adjunct professor at several local colleges.
