Local swimmers excel at conference championships

Editor’s note: Last week’s Sentinel included a story listing the results of the New Jersey Swimming and Diving Conference Championships, held at Frog Hollow Swim and Tennis Club in South Amboy on July 29 and 30. Unfortunately, due to a reporting error, that story included last year’s results. Here, with our apologies, are the correct results from this year’s event.

The two-day New Jersey Swimming and Diving Conference Championships marked the end of the summer season and provided one last chance for the area’s top swimmers to showcase their talents in what is one of the state’s most competitive meets.

The Nob Valley Swim Club of North Brunswick was led by Julie Rose who won the women’s 15-18 100 backstroke (1:09.83).

Among the other top finishers for Nob Valley were: Andy Rose, second, boys’ 11-12 50 breaststroke (38.57) and boys’ 11-12 100 IM, and third, boys’ 11-12 50 butterfly (34.38); Tanya Witlen, second, girls’ 13-14 100 breaststroke (1:26.97) and fifth, girls’ 13-14 200 IM (2:57.42); Nina Malanga, third, women’s 15-18 200 freestyle (2:24.09) and women’s 15-18 freestyle (1:06.28); Casey Snepar, third, men’s 15-18 100 breaststroke (1:16.91); Annie Bucca, fourth, girls’ 8-and-under 25 breaststroke (26.36); Nicole Gibbons, fourth, girls’ 10-and-under 100 freestyle (1:25.41) and fifth, girls’ 9-10 50 butterfly (44.26); Nicole Van Avery, fourth, girls’ 13-14 100 butterfly (1:20.12) and sixth, girls’ 13-14 100 freestyle (1:11.32); Brian Rose, fifth, men’s 15-18 100 breaststroke (1:18.16) and men’s 15-18 200 IM (2:39.95); Kevin Chibbaro, fifth, boys’ 11-12 50 freestyle (34.07); and Kaitlin Manning, fifth, girls’ 13-14 100 backstroke (1:20.06);

In addition, the boys’ 9-12 200 medley relay team of Jason Seidman, Ian Holubiak, Andy Rose and Matthew Burke won in 3:18.72, while the women’s 13-18 200 medley relay team of Julie Rose, Tanya Witlen, Nicole Van Avery and Nina Malanga won in 2:17.28.

Also in the relay events, the boys’ 9-12 200 freestyle relay team of Kevin Chibbaro, Jason Seidman, Matthew Burke and Ian Holubiak took second (2:36.77), while the women’s 13-18 200 freestyle relay team of Nicole Van Avery, Kaitlin Manning, Julie Rose and Nina Malanga took second in 2:02.54.

The Willows Swim Club of South Brunswick was led by Jamie Weingarten, who won the girls’ 8-and-under 25 freestyle (18.41), the girls’ 8-and-under 25 backstroke (21.96), and the girls’ 8-and-under 25-meter butterfly (21.12).

Willows also got top finishes from Gessica Chainiga, fourth, girls’ 9-10 50 backstroke (42.33), girls’ 9-10 50 butterfly (44.16) and girls’ 10-and-under 100 IM (1:34.41); Chris Hochman, fifth, boys’ 11-12 100 freestyle (1:13.65) and boys’ 11-12 50 backstroke (39.64); and Liz Samtur, sixth, girls’ 11-12 100 freestyle (1:10.57);

The North Brunswick Rapids also won its share of medals starting with Veronica Feltrin, who won the girls’ 13-14 200-meter freestyle (2:16.12), the girls’ 13-14 100-meter backstroke (1:13.34) and the girls’ 13-14 200-meter IM (2:40.42).

Colleen Murphy took home a pair of gold medals, winning the women’s 15-18 100 freestyle in 1:02.59 and the women’s 15-18 100 butterfly in 1:09.47, in addition to taking second in the women’s 15-18 100 backstroke (1:10.24).

Among the other top finishers for The Rapids were: Jean Park, third, girls’ 10-and-under 100 freestyle (1:22.31), fifth, girls’ 9-10 50 freestyle (37.28) and sixth, girls’ 10-and-under 100 IM (1:38.78); Nicole Karalevich, fourth, women’s 15-18 200 freestyle (2:24.52); Missy Socha, sixth, women’s 15-18 100 breaststroke (1:34.11); and Angela Pagliaro, fifth, girls’ 13-14 100 butterfly (1:21.86).

The women’s 13-18 200 medley relay team of Colleen Murphy, Missy Socha, Veronica Feltrin and Angela Pagliaro took second in 2:19.86.
