Regional hunger rising

As the economy struggles, so do the people. More and more of our neighbors and friends may be going hungry.

Regional food distribution facilities say that the demand is increasing, and in many cases, the supply is dwindling.

Lou Anne Wolf, the welfare director for South Brunswick, said this week that the food pantry there is empty.

Wolf said not many donations have been coming in of late, and she hopes some will be dropped off to the municipal building soon so the pantry can restock its shelves.

The sad fact is, however, that as the cost of living continues to rise in the region each year, more people are fighting to make ends meet.

Many of those we interviewed for our story this week said that the outlets are seeing more working people who simply don’t have enough money left over during the month for food.

It is tragic that 25 million to 30 million people in the most bountiful country on the planet feel the pangs of hunger two to four days each month.

That number is way too high, and may rise further.

We all should do more to end this problem.
