The South Brunswick High School Visual Ensemble, the varsity indoor colorguard team, traveled to Trumbull, Conn., on Feb. 2 to compete in the WGI – Southern New England Regional Competition. Returning as defending champions from 2001, the colorguard team competed in its first regional of the 2002 season and again placed first in scholastic open class competition.
South Brunswick’s Visual Ensemble’s 2002 program is titled "The Seasons" and is accompanied by the musical score "The American Seasons" by Mark O’Connor.
The 18-member squad combines intricate dance and colorguard highlights of spinning rifles, sabers and flags in a fast-paced visual depiction of the seasonal changes through spring, summer, fall and winter.
The group also competes in Winter Guard International (WGI) and Mid-Atlantic Indoor Network (MAIN) associations in indoor colorguard.
South Brunswick will host its main competition on March 9 at South Brunswick High School.
The show will feature more than 35 scholastic and independent units from New Jersey, Pennsylvania, New York, Connecticut, and Delaware, performing in AAA, AA, A, open and world-class competition.
The ensemble’s accomplishments in recent years include the following: 2001 WGI — Scholastic Open Class Championship finalist (11th in the nation); 2001 WGI — Scholastic Open Class Regional champions, in all four competitions entered — Southern New England, Eastern Regional, New England Regional and Mid-Atlantic Regional; 1998 WGI — Scholastic Open bronze medalist (third in the nation); MAIN — Scholastic Open Class champions in 2001, 1999, 1998, 1997 and 1996.
