I was in Roosevelt Park in Edison with my 4-year-old son in July. We walked past two Indian boys, who were approximately 8 years old, who were playing on the slides.
One said to the other that “Indians have hundreds of Gods and they are the only ones that are alive.”
This is an example of intolerance. While I certainly do not expect immigrants and their children to change religions, I do expect them to be tolerant of other religions, at least as far as to not disparage them as this young boy has been taught to do. It is quite appropriate to infer that this child’s parents are teaching and/or are allowing him to be taught this intolerance.
I welcome any leaders in the Indian community to respond and to address the Indian community.
I would be just as offended to hear a Catholic disparage a Hindu as otherwise, but that is not what I have heard on this occasion. Therefore, any words of wisdom they may have should be offered to those who teach their children to insult other people’s religions.
