Huntington’s Disease Society to host a pair of Hoop-A-Thons

On April 29 and May 6, the New Jersey Corporate Sports League and the New Jersey Lawyers Basketball League will co-sponsor a Hoop-A-Thon to benefit the Huntington’s Disease Society of America, New Jersey Chapter. For the first time the Hoop-A-Thon will be held at two separate locations.

The April 29 event will be held at Rutgers University’s Louis Brown Athletic Center on the Livingston Campus, Piscataway. The May 6 event will be held at Hoop Heaven, a brand new facility located in Whippany. Both events start at 9 a.m. and end at approximately 3 p.m.

The event entails "shooters" standing at the foul line and shooting as many baskets as they can in 10 minutes. For each basket that is sunk, sponsors — who are signed up by each shooter prior to the event — donate a pledged amount of money. Flat donations also are accepted.

Many shooters will receive gift certificates from the Sports Authority that are proportional to the money they raise. Every participant raising $75 or more will receive a Hoop-A-Thon T-shirt and a New Jersey Nets cap.

The net proceeds of the Hoop-A-Thon will benefit programs for Huntington’s disease, which is an inherited, progressively degenerative brain disorder that results in a loss of physical and mental control. The Huntington’s Disease Society of America supports social and clinical services, treatment, counseling, genetic testing, educational programs and research to find a cure.
