The Allentown High School boys’ track team broke into the win column last week with a 74-57 victory at Point Pleasant Beach.
But the Redbirds’ bid for a second win in two days was thwarted by Monsignor Donovan, 77-54.
The Redbirds are now 1-5 on the spring with one meet remaining.
Allentown made it a successful day at Point Beach with eight first places. Dave Ruthven and DeWayne Johnson each had two firsts. Ruthven doubled when he won the high (17.4) and intermediate (1:01.8) hurdles, while Johnson was best in the high jump (5-6) and pole vault (10-6).
Eric Dulfer placed first when he threw the shot 37-7. Mike Domingo scored first-place points when he took the 100 in 11.6. Eric Herkert’s 54.9 was best in the 400. And the 4X400 relay team of Zack Mahon, Tom Painchaud, Ruthven and Herkert won in 3:42.2.
In other results, Mahon was second in the 200 (25.0), Girard DeLorenzo was third in the 100 (11.8) and 200 (25.6), Mahon’s 58.9 was third in the 400, and Painchaud’s 2:10.8 took second in the 800.
Henk Bruins scored for the locals in the 800 (3rd place 2:21.3), 1600 ( 2nd, 5:03) and 3200 (11:51, tied for second with Scott Vorwerk). Kyle Brosseau’s 65.9 was second in the 400 hurdles, Painchaud (5-6) was second in the high jump, and Herkert (16 1/2) was third in the long jump.
Also, Chris Skeehan (9-0) was second in the pole vault, David Neary’s 105-2 took second in the discus, and Dan Gentz (131-4) and Anthony Stover (121-6 ) were two-three in the javelin.
“I expected to win,” said coach Ray Visbeck of the Point Beach outcome.
Visbeck was hoping to defeat Monsignor Donovan the following day, but it did not happen.
“I thought we had a shot but we didn’t do it,” said Visbeck, who hoped to wrap up the regular season two days ago with a win at McCorristin.
Bruins and Ruthven both won twice at Monsignor Donovan. Bruins took the 1600 (5:02) and 3200 (11:03), while Ruthven again was the day’s best hurdler, winning the highs (17.4) and intermediates (60.1).
Other Allentown winners were Herkert (54.9 400), Painchaud (2:11 800), and Skeehan (139 1/2 javelin).
In other results at Monsignor Donovan, Skeehan was second in the 100 (12.3), and third in the long jump (17-9.5) and pole vault (8 feet), Dulfer’s 35-7.5 took second in the shot, and Gentz’ 126-5 was third in the javelin.
Herkert took third in the 200 with his 25.0, Bruins was third in the 800 at 2:19, Vorwerk (5:04 in the 1600 and 11:04 in the 3200) earned a pair of second places, and Painchaud high-jumped 5-6 for second place.
