Cops running to help local Special Olympics

East Windsor police officers Lt. Joseph Bonavico and Sgt. William Froehlich participated in the Law Enforcement Torch Run to support the Special Olympics of New Jersey, June 2.
The East Windsor officers joined other law enforcement officers from Plainsboro, Princeton and Wets Windsor in the 3.1-mile run, which benefits the Special Olympics.
The runners met at the edge of Kingston and ran to the borough police headquarters in Princeton with one of the many torches which then proceeded to the College of New Jersey for the opening of the 2000 Summer Games for the Special Olympics of New Jersey. The Torch Run is one of many fund raising events the Law Enforcement Officers use to help the Special Olympics of New Jersey. Another event is the Polar Bear plunge which takes place in Point Pleasant.
During this year’s Summer Games, law enforcement officers from around the state participated in many venues … the Port Authority Officers had a dunk tank, which was the most popular event in the Olympic Village. Athletes had the opportunity to try to hit the target and have an officer plunge into the tank of cold water.
Participating officers also hand out the medals after each event to the athletes. Each athlete earns a medal for participating in events such as track and field, bocce, tennis, swimming, gymnastics, table tennis, softball and weightlifting. The officers place the medal around the athlete’s neck and often get a handshake, or, sometimes, a "high five" and sometimes, a big hug and kiss.
