Twp. wants state to police cell phone use

EAST BRUNSWICK — Township officials adopted a resolution on Monday, recommending that the state take over the responsibility of regulating cell phone use while driving.

"We would prefer to have the matter addressed at the state level rather than on a town-by-town basis," Mayor Bill Neary said.

"It would not only be fairer that way, but the state is probably better equipped to evaluate the risks and benefits of driving while using a cell phone," he said.

The township maintains that leaving the decision up to individual communities may result in biased or unfair laws being passed.

The resolution will be sent to Gov. Christine Whitman, state Sen. Jack Sinagra (R-18), Assemblyman Peter Barnes and Assemblywoman Barbara Buono (both D-18).
