FLORENCE – The district Board of Education has named Gerald Steffe, the district’s child study team leader, as the acting superintendent.
Former Superintendent Ernest Brattstrom submitted his resignation at the Aug. 3 school board meeting and is on sabbatical.
Board of Education President Charles Martine said Mr. Steffe is the district’s senior experienced administrator.
"He brings a wealth of experience," he said.
Mr. Steffe will assume the duties of the superintendent, and remain the child study team leader.
Mr. Martine said he is confident Mr. Steffe will be able to do the work of both positions.
He said Mr. Steffe will receive a raise of about $5,000 for taking on the added responsibility.
Mr. Steffe served as the Principal of Florence Memorial High School for 20 years before taking the child study team post.
Mr. Brattstrom will be on sabbatical until the resignation takes effect on June 30, 2001. Unless he accepts another job, he will continue to receive salary and benefits until that time.
If Mr. Brattstrom accepts another position, it will release the district’s obligation and will hire a permanent replacement.
