Support no-kill shelter for animals locally

LETTER TO THE EDITOR

To the editor:
I want to implore people who care about animals to please attend on Jan. 24 a Hillsborough Township Committee meeting in support of a no-kill animal shelter and a spay, neuter, return, policy.
That is when feral colonies of cats are trapped, spayed, given shots, and have their ear clipped, (for identification).
They are returned to where they were found, and fed, and monitored.
I have been rescuing abandoned cats from Hillsborough and surrounding areas for many years. People that know me, relay stories about cats to me. Here is one such story.
The Saturday after Christmas, the Northeast was hit with a substantial snowstorm. A gentleman was out driving his plow down the road. He was going about his business, when he spotted a box on the side of the road. He stopped, got out and picked up the box. He noticed the box was sealed shut with masking tape.
After tearing the tape from the box he was horrified to find a cat in the box. The cat was about 6 months old or so, and thankfully none-the-worse for wear.
The snow plow driver was kind enough to keep the cat and bring him home to his family. Not all cats are so fortunate.
I have heard so many stories on the horrible ways humans treat cats and other animals it hurts me to think of them.
That is why I am asking, no begging, any and all persons who care, to please come to the Hillsborough Township Committee meeting, at 8 p.m. Jan. 24, in the Municipal Complex court room.
I encourage people to tell their stories and let the Township Committee know that funding must be appropriated for a no-kill shelter and S.N.R. policy.
S.N.R. is the most efficient, humane, and cost-effective program to help halt the prolific spread of feral cats. The problem is out of control and the methods that are currently being used are not effective.
I believe that a society can best be judged by how well it treats its "lesser creatures." I feel confident that we can do a better job!
If you would like more information on S.N.R. or have any other questions, please call Carols Cats at (908) 874-4660.
