Seashore opens season
with big win over Sands

CHRIS KELLY The Sands Beach Club’s Kim Gittleson swims to a third-place finish in the girls’ 15- to 17-year-old freestyle race during a meet with Seashore on June 28.
After only nine events, the Sands Beach Club of Sea Bright held a 49-48 lead over Seashore of Long Branch, but both sides knew it was far from over. There were 52 races scheduled for the competition.
The athletes of Seashore took control after the 10th race and ran away for a 309-203 victory to open the 2001 North Shore Club swimming season.
After turning over the first four golden spots, Seashore went on to dominate the pool for 38 first-place finishes.
Starting off the Long Branch swimming team were Lauren Atzalis (girls’ 10/U 25-yard butterfly), Luke Vasta (boys’ 10/U 25-yard breaststroke), Matt Stengel and Brianna Sovierno (boys’ and girls’ 11/12 100-yard individual medley), and Joe Wilensky and Lauren Ostrowsky (boys’ and girls’ 13-17 100-yard individual medley).
The Sands’ opening barrage was triggered by Brian Wikoff and Meredith Moler (boys’ and girls’ freestyle), Nick Pederson and Eileen Propert (boys’ and girls’ 10/U 25-yard backstroke) and Jon Portman (10/U 25-yard butterfly).
Breaking up Seashore’s early effort was Catherine Silva, who won the girls’ 10/U 25-yard breaststroke race.
The Sands also captured the first relay medals with Pederson, Jimmy Tully, Portman and Terry O’Brien; and Propert, Silva, Blaire Wikoff and Devan Pattwell taking top honors in the boys’ and girl’s 9/10 100-yard medley relay races.
Seashore would go on to win all but one of the remaining relays as the team of Carolyn Rogby, Susan Siebel, Sarah Lenn and Danielle McPeak brought home the gold in the 8/U 100-yard, freestyle relay.
Garnering the gold in the relay races for Seashore were Jeff Kless, Roberto Nieves, Stengel and Sean Chambrovich for the boys and Elizabeth Uliano, Sovierno, Emily Greenspan and Jessica Himmelman for the girls (11/12 100-yard medley relay); Rich Fuller, Mike Farina, Wilensky and Hugh Chambrovich for the boys and Lauren Stengel, Ostrowsky, Katie Brown and Erin Fischell for the girls (13/17 200-yard, medley relay); Richie DeMaree, Dylon Chayes, Chris Helstern and Durand Bacote (boys’ 8/U 100-yard, freestyle relay); and Vasta, Keith White, Shane McCary and Kyle Bawie for the boys and Lauren Pitzalos, Raeanna DeMatt, Jen Fischell and Caitlin Fisher for the girls (100-yard, freestyle relay).
Also, Matt Stengel, Sean Chambrovich, Kless and Nieves for the boys, and Himmelman, Greenspan, Sovierno and Uliano for the girls (11/12 200-yard, freestyle relay); and Mike Chianello, Tim Chambrovich, Craig Messer and John Matthews for the boys and Ostrowsky, Erin Fischell, Christina Urban and Lauren Stengel for the girls (200-yard, freestyle relay).
Girls’ 15/17 200-yard freestyle relay: Christina Gulian, Robyn Halper, Margaret Bernard and Brown. Boys’: Derak Bacole, Chris Grecco, John Gordon and Ed Marsh.
Other individual gold medals seized by Seashore belonged to boys’ 7-year-old, 25-yard freestyle: Bacote; boys’ 8-year-old, 25-yard free: Helstern; girls’ and boys’ 11/12, 25-yard backstroke: Uliano and Nieves; boys’ and girls’ 11/12 25-yard butterfly: Matt Stengel and Sovierno; girls’ and boys’ 11/12 25-yard, breaststroke: Greenspan and Kless; boys’ and girls’ 13/17 50-yard backstroke: Fuller and Ostrowsky; girls’ and boys’ 50-yard butterfly: Gulian and Wilensky; girls’ 13/17 50-yard breaststroke: Lauryn Stengel; boys’ and girls’ 11/12 50-yard free: Sean Chambrovich and Uliano; girls’ and boys’ 13/14 50-yard free: Lauryn Stengel and Tim Chambrovich; boys’ and girls’ 15/17 50-yard free: Hugh Chambrovich and Gulian.
Stealing other individual golds away from their hosts were girls’ 7-year-old, 25-yard free: Finn; girls’ 8-year-old 25-yard free: Pattwell; boys’ and girls’ 25-yard 9/10-year-old free: O’Brien and Wikoff.
Seashore will take its 1-0 record with it when it hosts Ship Ahoy, while the Sands travel to the Sea Bright Beach Club on Thursday, July 5. Both meets are slated for 6 p.m.
