Bucks choral group to present ‘Carmina Burana’

   NEW HOPE — The Bucks County Choral Society will present a special performance of "Carmina Burana" by Carl Orff Saturday, July 28, at 8 p.m. at the New Hope — Solebury High School.
   The concert will be the society’s first appearance at the New Hope Performing Arts Festival and will feature soprano Susan Whitenack, baritone Thomas Irwin and tenor Robert Rowland with Artistic Director Thomas Lloyd conducting the choir and orchestra.
   This work’s text was drawn from a medieval manuscript, "The Carmina Burana," a collection of more than 200 Latin and German poems assembled by 13th century Benedictine monks.
   Composer Orff (1895-1982) was born in Germany near the abbey that housed this manuscript, From this collection, Orff garnered a series of poems and set them to modern music, now performed as "Carmina Burana."
   Ms. Whitenack, a coloratura soprano from Doylestown, joins the choir bringing with her a background performing in operas, concerts, festivals and cabaret programs. Ms. Whitenack is on the faculty at the International School of Performing Arts in Doylestown that hosts a summer opera workshop that is part of the Arts Festival. Baritone Mr. Irwin is a returning former student of the workshop and lives in New Orleans.
   The concert will be held at the New Hope-Solebury High School. Sponsored in part by the New Hope Arts Commission, tickets are $15.
