The Old Bridge Little League 10-year-old All-Stars recently took second place in the 16-team Old Bridge All-Star Tournament. Teams from various areas of the state participated.

Among the highlights of the tournament were Old Bridge’s come-from-behind, 7-6 win over Cheesequake Little League, a 17-1 drubbing of Wall Township and a 9-1 win over the powerful Franklin Little League team. Old Bridge bowed in the championship game, 9-4, to a solid South Brunswick team. The Old Bridge players are Robert Orecchio (2B), George Gonzales (P/1B), Matt DiPoalo (CF), Shawn Timper (RF), Joe Caria (3B/P), Cliff Tinson (C), Nick Panos (SS), Frankie Wheeler (OF), Ray Gurbisz (LF), Ray Cruz (SS), Andy Lee (OF/P), Greg Padin (2B) and Jason Patel (OF).

The team is coached by Glen Gurbisz and Frank Santoro, and managed by George Gonzales Sr.

The Old Bridge Knights 14U AAU soccer team finished second in the prestigious East Coast Invitational Challenge, where it competed against teams from Virginia, Maryland, New York, Pennsylvania, Delaware and Washington, D.C. The team members are Danny Davison, Patrick Dineen, Adam Drici, Mike Frederico, Timmy Lucas, Kevin Olivieri, Robert Peiprocola, Sebastian Pruiti, Tom Spatafora, Brandon Villamagna and Timmy Wojcik. The head coach is Pat Dineen, assisted by Joe Pruiti.

The Monroe Township Pop Warner midget football team opened its season with a 16-0 win over Colonia. Monroe’s first score came when Jerry Spiga ran in from 30 yards out behind the blocking of Kyle Horsch, Matt Sussman, Mike Marotta and Ron Kushner. Ed Neidzielski added the extra point for the 8-0 lead. Monroe added to its lead when quarterback Jarred Jiminez rambled 35 yards for the touchdown, and Neidzielski again added the extra point. Monroe’s tough defense was led by Derek Melynk, Josh Urbanek, Erik Swenson, Mike Marotta, Jarred Jiminez, Jerry Spiga, Ron Kushner, Ed Neidzelski, Matt Schork, Matt Sussman and Nick Zirkel.

The Jersey Storm U12 select travel baseball team is looking for a top pitcher. The team plays 50-70 times a year and has won numerous tournaments. In 2002, the team’s schedule includes several out-of-state tournaments, including participation in the Cooperstown Dreams Park tournament. To schedule a tryout, call (609) 259-4003.
