The Monroe boys travel basketball team finished its regular season in first place with a 9-1 record after defeating Marlboro, 38-27. The team was led by Mark Gulick, who scored 15 points. Matt Genevieve added five points, and Joe Costa, Kyle Horsch and Mike Buffalino combined for 14 points and 22 rebounds.
Tommy Sorenson played a strong game at point guard, gaining three points and 12 assists.
On Sunday, the Monroe team beat Colts Neck, 43-29, behind Sorenson’s 19 points. Kevin Synarski, Buffalino and Colin Horsch combined for nine points and 10 rebounds, while Costa and Horsch controlled the inside with eight points and 16 rebounds. Mark Gulick added seven points and four rebounds. The team will start the playoffs following this weekend.
The Morgan-Parlin Panthers opened up its Pop Warner season by splitting with the Port Reading Saints. The Mitey-Mites were downed 21-0 despite a good effort from both sides of the ball. In the Jr. PeeWees game it was a different story as the Panthers, led by the offensive line, controlled the game. The running of Jason Addino, Matt Wanko and Christian Geant and a solid defensive effort led to a 19-0 Panthers win. In the PeeWees game, the Panthers got off to a slow start and fell behind, 6-0. They eventually fell 26-6, although both the offense and defense played well. The Midgets, led by the strong play of John Monaco, Shawn Thomas, Justin Sinclair and Jihad Smith, beat the Saints 12-0.
The following are the results of the Tamarack Women’s Nine-Hole Golf Association’s Aug. 23 outing at the Tamarack West Course. The game played was "four clubs and a putter," full handicap. In Flight A, Monroe’s Ellie de la Bandera was the winner with a 33, followed by Thelma Tsacnairs (39, match of cards), Monroe’s Fran Poulin (39) and Old Bridge’s Suzanne Levine (41). In Flight B, Parlin’s Dot Peters was the winner with a 34, followed by Spotswood’s Jean Ertle (38, match of cards), East Brunswick’s Joan Semen (38) and East Brunswick’s Gerry Hurley (40). In Flight C, Monroe’s Jeannette Roche was the winner with 34, followed by Jamesburg’s Anne Jawidzik (35), Monroe’s Helen Michna (38) and North Brunswick’s Linda Pitone (41). Ellie de la Bandera had the fewest putts with 14.

Registration is being accepted for the Old Bridge ice hockey winter youth instructional program, sponsored by the township Department of Parks, Recreation & Social Services. The 11-week program will be held on Sunday evenings and will teach youngsters ages 5-12 the fundamentals of hockey, including stick handling, passing and shooting. Participants are required to wear full equipment. The 90-minute sessions are broken into two age groups: 5-8 and 9-13. The 5-8 group runs from 5:15-6:45 p.m.; the older group runs from 6:45-8:15 p.m. The cost is $200 for Old Bridge residents and $250 for nonresidents.
