The Monroe Township Hoops Association will hold registration for the 2001-2002 season for boys and girls in kindergarten through high school on Sept. 20 and 25 from 7-9 p.m. at the Monroe Community Center, Monmouth Road. The fee is $30; however, the fee for all registrants received after Oct. 12 will be $55. The season will begin on Dec. 1, with practices throughout November.

The Spotswood Recreation Department will hold registration at the Spotswood Library for floor hockey on Saturday from 10:15 a.m. to noon. The program will run on Mondays for grades 4-6.

The Golden Bear Chargers Midget squad knocked off North Brunswick, 23-0, last weekend to remain unbeaten since Sept. 23, 1997. Scoring started in the second quarter when Zack Tardiff hit Mike Dubovick with a 70-yard strike. Mike Franchion added the extra point to make it 7-0. Dubovick then added a 28-yard field goal for a 10-0 halftime lead. In the third quarter, it was Tardiff to Dubovick again with a 12-yard strike. In the fourth quarter, Vinny Quaglieri raced it in from the nine-yard line to cap the scoring. Strong GBC defense performances by Robert Wait, John and Tim Dubovick, Jeremy Chisiom, and outstanding special teams play by Nick Dzeliek kept North Brunswick scoreless.

The PeeWee squad lost a tough shootout, 45-33, led by Jim Geroulson, while the Jr. PeeWee team won 19-6, and the Mighty-Mite squad won 21-7.

On Sept. 8, the Jr. Midgets lost a heartbreaker, 13-6, to Burlington. Trailing 6-0 Jeron Mayfield broke a 60-yard run to tie it at 6-6 at the half. GBC was down 13-6 on the final drive when they got stopped at the Burlington 18. Anthony Scoles, Kiki Douglas and Rob Thuring led the attack.

Registration is being accepted for the Old Bridge ice hockey winter youth instructional program, sponsored by the township Department of Parks, Recreation and Social Services. The 11-week program will be held on Sunday evenings and will teach youngsters age 5 through 12 the fundamentals of hockey, including stickhandling, passing and shooting. Participants are required to wear full equipment. The 90-minute sessions are broken into two age groups: 5-8 and 9-13. The 5-8 group runs from 5:15-6:45 p.m. the older group runs from 6:45-8:15 p.m. The cost is $200 for Old Bridge residents and $250 for nonresidents. In their fourth game of the season, the Monroe Wolverine Jr. PeeWee squad beat West Windsor 19-0 to improve to 2-1-1. The first score came from Joey Ruopoli with a 3-yard TD, capped off by Frankie Ruopoli’s PAT. To start the second half, Dale DeGraw had a fumble recovery and a 31-yard TD run. Brian Taylor added an interception. Travis Dufner capped the scoring by returning a fumble for a TD. Strong play also came from Chris Gregor and Rich Lorfing.

South River Parks and Recreation Department will hold registration for the following fall programs on Sept. 25 through Sept. 27 from 7-8:30 p.m. at the Elementary School auxiliary gym: street hockey for ages 6-16, teams grouped by age, games played on Saturdays and practices coordinated between coach and the recreation department (fee is $20); karate for new students only; women’s cardio karate (ages 13 and up), on Monday, Wednesday and Fridays from 6:15-7:15 p.m. (fee is $38); kids taekwondo adventure, for boys and girls ages 5-10, on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4-5 p.m. (fee is $38); bowling on Saturday mornings at MidState Bowl beginning Oct. 6 for children ages 5-14, cost is $8.75 per week and must be paid at lanes, preregistration required through recreation department. The Monroe Stampede, a U8 travel soccer team made up of boys and girls, competed this past weekend in the Piscataway tournament and went 1-2-1. Danny Brix and Joey Lefave had goals for Monroe while Brian Nale, Jena Pritzlaff, Kevin Brix, Domenic Polidoro, Aaron Potter and Lefave all played well in goal. Matt Gandy, Andy Dooley and Holly Olsen controlled the midfield, while Fletcher Markulin and Potter supplied offensive pressure. The Brix brothers, Nale and Pritzlaff anchored the defense. Best wishes to Brian Nale, who broke his arm during the tournament, and will be out of action for several weeks.

The Monroe travel boys basketball team lost in the championship game to Middletown, 42-40. The team was led by the great play of Tommy Sorensen, who had eight points, eight assists and four steals. Mark Gulick and Joe Costa also played strong games, hitting key three-point baskets to rally the team. Gulick finished with nine points and Costa had five points and 11 rebounds. Kyle Horsch and Mike Buffalino combined for eight points and 16 rebounds. Vincent Mahmoud scored eight points. Matt Genevieve scored a basket, and Kevin Synarksi and Colin Horsch also played well.

There will be tryouts for the travel basketball team for the upcoming season this weekend at the Recreation Center. On Saturday, the U9 boys will be trying out from noon to 1:30 p.m. To be eligible, youngsters must be Monroe residents and must have been 9 by Aug. 1. The girls fifth-, sixth-grade and girls U12 team tryouts will be held on Saturday from 1:30-3 p.m. Youngsters must be Monroe residents and have been 12 by Aug. 1. The fifth-, sixth-grade boys will tryout from 3-5 p.m. Saturday. There will also be tryouts for seventh-grade boys. For more information, call Joe Costa at (732) 723-5000.

The Monroe Mystic, a U14 girls soccer team, opened their fall season by capturing first place in the Piscataway Soccer Tournament. They won all three games by defeating teams from Edison, Tewksbury and New Providence. Two of the games were decided by shootouts. Goal scorers for the Mystic were Jackie Barclay, Amanda Polick and Raven Chiara. Offensive pressure was provided by Diana Stelmaszczyk, Alyssa Gioino, and Alicia Collura. Solid midfield play came from Sasha Potter, Kristen Kunigonis and Kristen Poemer, while outstanding defense was supplied by Ashley Armstrong, Alissa Stampoulos and Dana Hollander. Megan Boyce made several key saves in goal during the games and in the shootouts to help the Mystic prevail. The Mystic prevailed again, beating Roxbury 3-0 with goals by Raven Chiara, Sasha Potter and Diana Stelmaszczyk. Alyssa Gioino chipped in with two assists, and Alicia Collura had one assist. Ashley Armstrong and Kristen Kunigonis played tough defense. Megan Boyce and Dana Hollander combined in goal for the shutout.
