The following are the results of the Tamarack Women’s Nine-Hole Golf Association’s Sept. 13 outing. The game played was stroke play, full handicap. Thelma Tsacnaris won the A Flight with a 33 (match of cards), followed by Suzanne Levine (33), Carol Mulvey (33) and Marge Widder (34). In the B Flight, Jean Ertle was the winner with a 30, followed by Jean Ralph (32), Madelyn DiMaria (34) and Marion Marshall (36). In the C Flight, Rosanne Marosy was the winner with a 30, followed by Lois Hopkins (32, match of cards), Florence Margulies (32) and Linda Pitone (36). Widder had the fewest putts with 15. At the Sept. 20 outing, the game played was stroke play, no handicap. In the A Flight, Thelma Tsacnaris was the winner with 35, followed by Gail Dimaio (37). In the B Flight, Joan Semen was the winner with 42, followed by Doris Colgrove (44). In the C Flight, Abbey Lorber was the winner with 41, followed by Ronnie Bohn (52). Dimaio had the fewest putts with 15.

The Battle of Monmouth Strikers, an U13 boys soccer team, started its fall 2001 season with two solid victories over strong opponents. On Sept. 15, the Strikers opened the season with a 4-0 victory over the Old Bridge Metrostarz, avenging their only loss last season. Frank Carr had two unassisted goals around Zach Theinert’s goal from Nick Maccaro, and Anthony Kozar’s goal from Carr. Rich Feldhan and Joe Nemeth shared the keeper duties to earn the shutout. On Sept. 23, the Strikers defeated the Howell Blazers 4-0 to improve to 2-0. In a solid team effort, the Strikers dominated play throughout the game. Scoring for the Strikers were Carr from Michael Rettberg; Maccaro from Ivan Barreto and Marc Magliaro; Kozar unassisted; and Carr from Rettberg. Feldhan’s key saves earned the team’s second straight shutout. The midfield of Barreto, Carr, Theinert and Brian Zimmer has dominated play with solid support from fullbacks Lawrence Foppiano, Nemeth, Billy Phillips and sweeper Dale Santiago. The boys are from Jamesburg, Monroe and Old Bridge.

The Monroe Wolverine PeeWees team captured its third win of the year on Sept. 29, beating the North Edison Shamrocks 20-0. Ryan Meseroll scored the first touchdown while Tom Sorenson and Michael Barnes added touchdowns later on. The PeeWees’ next game is on Saturday against East Windsor in Monroe.

Melissa Ruff of East Brunswick is a freshman at Franklin and Marshall College, Lancaster, Pa. She was recently named the Centennial Conference’s Female Soccer Player of the Week after playing brilliantly as the starting goalkeeper for the school’s soccer team. To date Ruff, who was the starting goalie for East Brunswick High School’s soccer team last season, ranks second in goals against average (.44), allowing only three goals in 611 minutes, and is fourth in saves, tied for second in shutouts, and third in save percentages in the conference.

The borough of Sayreville’s employees will play members of Faith Fellowship Ministries in a charity softball game at Raritan Bay Waterfront Park in South Amboy at 6:30 p.m. on Oct. 12. Proceeds from the game will benefit the Association for Brain Injured Children, a nonprofit organization founded in 1968 that meets the needs of special children of the community and runs year-round activities and a summer camp program. The Monroe Midgets lost to the Union Rams, 43-30, in Monroe. Monroe opened the scoring on a TD run from Jarred Jimenez, with Ed Niedelski adding the extra point for an 8-0 lead. Union scored three touchdowns before Monroe got back on the board with a fumble recovery for a TD by Jimenez. Rocco Giaquinto and David Coyle caused the fumble. Monroe then fell behind 36-16, but fought back to within 36-24 on a 40-yard TD pass from Jimenez to Jerry Spiga. Union then scored another TD before Monroe finished the scoring with a 25-yard TD pass from Jimenez to Chris Ward. The Midgets also fell to North Edison, 37-20. Ward, Jimenez and Spiga scored the three touchdowns for Monroe.

The Monroe Mystic, a U14 girls soccer team, dropped a 3-0 decision to Piscataway after a scoreless first half. It was their first loss of the season. Sasha Potter, Kristen Kunigonis, Alyssa Gioino and Diana Stelmaszczyk all played well in the loss.

The East Brunswick Energizers, an U17 girls soccer team, will be conducting a tryout on Oct. 14 at 10 a.m. at the Hammarskjold Middle School fields. The majority of the team are high school level players from local schools. The team intends to play indoor over the winter and travel soccer in the spring. Players must be born between Aug. 1, 1984 and July 31, 1985. Younger (U16) players can also try out for the team. Contact Kevin Kelly at (732) 727-7937 for additional information and registration.

The Monroe Stampede, a co-ed U8 travel team, came away this weekend with a tie and a loss. In the tie, 2-2, Danny Brix had both goals. Both of the opponents’ goals came off penalty kicks. Jena Pritzlaff and Kevin Brix split time in goal and had several saves. Aaron Potter, Fletcher Markulin and Joey Lefave supplied the offensive pressure, while Holly Olsen, Matt Gandy, Andy Dooley and Domenic Polidoro were solid in the midfield. Pritzlaff and Danny Brix stopped the opponents on the defensive end. In the other match, the Stampede dropped a 5-0 decision. Polidoro, Gandy, Olsen and Dooley each played well in the midfield. Olsen and Dooley also played well in goal.
