Registration is being accepted for the Old Bridge winter ice hockey youth instructional program, sponsored by the township Department of Parks, Recreation & Social Services. The 11-week program will be held on Sunday evenings from Dec. 16 through March 10 at the Old Bridge Sports Arena. Youngsters ages 5 through 12 will be instructed on the fundamentals of hockey, including stick handling, passing and shooting. Participants are required to wear full equipment. The 90-minute sessions are broken into two age groups: 5-8 and 9-13. The 5-8 group runs from 5:15 to 6:45 p.m.; the older group runs from 6:45 to 8:15 p.m. The cost is $200 for Old Bridge residents and $250 for nonresidents. Sayreville resident Danny Giovenco, 13, won first place in the 13-17 age group in the Run Through Deal 5-Mile Run on Oct. 14. Giovenco finished the race in 40 minutes flat, just ahead of his father, George Giovenco Jr. (40:20). Danny’s time of 40 minutes is a personal best for the eighth-grade student at Sayreville Middle School. At the Oct. 28 Frost on the Pumpkin 10K Run in South RIver, Giovenco won first place in the U14 age division with a time of 50:12.

Old Bridge Little League will hold registrations on the following dates at the Clubhouse on Route 516: Nov. 2, from 7-9 p.m.; Nov. 3 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.; Nov. 4 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The fees are $45 for cubs, $55 for individual players, and $65 for families. A refundable work bond is required, and there will be significant late fees for late registration (after Nov. 30). New registrants must bring birth certificates. The Madison Park girls 2002 softball registration will be held on Nov. 1 and 8 at the Old Bridge Library from 7-8:30 p.m. The league is open to all girls between the ages of 5 and 17 in the Old Bridge and surrounding areas. No work bond is required. All players receive a full uniform. Fees are $65 for the first child, $35 for each additional child (check or money order only). The Sayreville Lady Bees and the Monmouth Coast Breeze played to a 2-2 tie this week. Audrey Gagnon played well for the Lady Bees netting two goals on the day. Brittni Rooth and Julianna Burns each posted assists. The Lady Bees are now 6-0-1 for the season.

The Sayreville Recreation Wrestling season kicks off next Monday and there is still time to register for the upcoming season. The program is open to boys and girls from Sayreville and South Amboy from the first through eighth grades. No previous wrestling experience is necessary, and training is provided by a qualified coaching staff.
