RBC wins backyard brawl against Red Bank Bucs
Caseys anchored by 11 first-place finishes

You never know what you’re going to get when you pit cross-town neighbors against each other. Even in the swimming pool.

Usually you get inspired performances, inspired by a battle for the town’s bragging rights. And that’s exactly what fans at the Ranney School, Tinton Falls, viewed last week when Red Bank Catholic High School’s swim teams defeated their counterparts from Red Bank Regional, 104 -66 (girls) and 84-76 (boys).

The girls’ team narrowly edged out their guests, 6-5, for first-place finishes, while securing the win with eight second-place times.

Leading the way for RBC’s victory was Christie LaRusso, Lauren Pfeifer, Carrie Rider and Sara Schwartz (200-meter medley relay); Bridget Pelger (200 and 100-meter freestyle); Colleen Quinn (200-meter individual medley); Lauren O’Connor (500-meter freestyle); and Colleen Murphy, Rider, Quinn and Pelger (400-meter freestyle relay).

Winning the gold for the Lady Bucs were Mary McCue (50-meter freestyle and 100-meter backstroke), Kim Baguchinsky (100-meter butterfly), Alex List, McCue, Baguchinsky and Jenna Moser-Cohen (200-meter freestyle relay).

Securing the win for the Caseys, by earning second-place points, were Jess Jaisen, Aly Jensen, Meghan McGrath and Cherylann DeVito (200 medley relay), Alicia Zapf (200 IM), Schwartz (50 free), Rider (100 butterfly), Quinn (100 free) Murphy, Pfeifer, LaRusso and Schwartz (200 freestyle relay), Jaisen (100 backstroke) and Jensen (100 breaststroke).

On the boys’ side of the pool the outcome wasn’t determined until the meet was finally over.

Going into the final event, RBR trailed 78-68, with the 400 freestyle relay remaining.

If the Bucs could win first and second, with eight points to the winner, four to second place and two to third, they could have ended the meet in a deadlock, 80-80 tie.

However, RBR could only manage first place, as RBC won both second and third to secure their win.

The Caseys only beat out their guests in four races, with a bulk of their necessary points coming from second place.

Posting second-place times were Glen Mulligan, Brian Cahill, Cory Kisiel and Todd Vaniderstine (200 medley relay); Ted Rechlin (200 IM and 100 breaststroke); Steve Melynkevich (100 butterfly); Kisiel (500 free); Brendan Creagh, Mulligan, T.J. Wall and Vaniderstine (200 freestyle relay); Jim Denker (100 backstroke); and Melynkevich, Rechlin, Kisiel and Denker (400 freestyle relay).

Denker (200 free), Melynkevich (50 free), Vaniderstine (100 free), and Melynkevich, Rechlin, Kisiel and Denker (200 freestyle relay) started their team on the way to victory with first-place honors.

Winning the gold for RBR were Tim Chambrovich, Roland Flego, Justin Magwood and Hugh Chambrovich (200 medley relay); Tim Chambrovich (200 IM and 100 backstroke); Mike Kelly (100 butterfly); Hugh Chambrovich (500 free); Flego (100 breaststroke), and Kelly, Hugh Chambrovich, Flego and Tim Chambrovich (400 freestyle relay).
