Editorial: Let residents decide future of library

By: Mae Rhine
The New Hope-Solebury Library Board of Trustees must think carefully before it makes a decision where to move the library from its present location on Ferry Street in New Hope.
Eight members of the 15-member board want to trade its present 2,800-square-foot building and land for 5,000 square feet of space underneath the new James A. Michener Art Museum satellite in Union Square. They say the library needs more space, and this move is the only one that fits its financial capabilities.
Those opposed to the move don’t want to see the library in what they consider a basement. They don’t feel 5,000 square feet is enough space. They favor building a new facility in Solebury Township on part of the Paxson property at the corner of Aquetong Road and Route 202 along with the purchase of 33 acres of that land.
While that sounds ideal, even to the eight other members who favor moving underneath the Michener satellite, the cost is prohibitive. Estimates range from $1.5 to $2 million for the project. It could take up to five years to raise that kind of money, the board admits.
It’s time for the community to give its input. As board President John Blady said, "A library is the people."
Even a basement facility could be made to look pleasing. But more important, it’s what the community wants — and is willing to help pay for — that’s important.
Those concerned about their library should attend the next board meeting at the library 7:30 p.m., Jan. 9.
