colon cancer information

Riverview Medical Center’s Booker cancer center, in commemoration of Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month in March, has issued facts about the risks of colorectal cancer.

Risk factors include: age — the disease usually strikes men and women age 50 and older; race — African Americans have the highest risk of developing the cancer; and hereditary — there may be an increased risk if other family members have had the disease.

Prevention factors are: exercise — individuals who exercise regularly often lower the risk of getting colon cancer; diet — a healthy and balanced diet with plenty of fruits, vegetables and grains, and less red meat lowers the risk of colon cancer; and alcohol consumption — individuals should limit alcohol consumption to moderate amounts.
