Workers who lost jobs, income from NYC attacks offered aid

The 9/11 United Services Group recently announced a coordinated plan by three of its member agencies for the next phase of assistance for workers displaced by the events of Sept. 11.

The agencies — the American Red Cross in Greater New York, Safe Horizon and The Salvation Army — will schedule appointments through Feb. 22 for workers in need of cash assistance due to loss of job or income.

Eligible are individuals who worked below Canal Street as of Sept. 11 and who lost their job by a certain date: Dec. 31 for the Red Cross, and Jan. 11 for Safe Horizon and The Salvation Army. Assistance is also available for those who can demonstrate work-related income losses. Support is available for noncitizens regardless of immigration status.

Appointments must be scheduled by Feb. 22, but need not take place that day. Individuals may apply with one of the three charities to become eligible for services from all three, provided the individual meets qualifications of each agency.

Individuals may call the local United Way to find locations where appointments may be made.
