WEST LONG BRANCH — In an effort to give back to the community, students at Monmouth University are asking local community groups to submit requests for jobs they would like volunteers from the college to perform.

A representative of the university’s Student Government Association said the students would be available to help with planting, raking, cleaning, fixing and other such tasks.

The representative said they will also be available to visit senior citizen centers and work with schoolchildren if necessary.

The students are conducting the work as part of the Big Event, a one-day community service project in which many other colleges around the country are taking part.

The community service will be performed March 23. Deadline for submitting job requests to Monmouth University is Feb. 27.

The representative said letters have been sent to schools, churches, police stations, senior citizen centers and municipal organizations in the local community, inviting them to submit job requests. Any group that would like to utilize the student volunteers should call the SGA office at (732) 571-3484.

The Big Event began in 1982 when six students at Texas A&M University got together to clean a local cemetery as a way to thank the Bryan/College Station community for all of its years of support to the students. It has since evolved into the largest single-day, student-run service project in the nation with at least 24 other colleges and university participating.
