How can parents foster strength, hope and optimism in an unpredictable world?
The events following Sept. 11 have challenged parents, teachers and community members who are concerned about the reactions of children and teens in a changing world.
Dr. Robert Brooks, a speaker and author on the themes of resilience, self-esteem, motivation and family relationships, will speak May 23 at 7:30 p.m. at Hopewell Valley Central High School auditorium.
In his presentation, Dr. Brooks will describe factors that help children and adolescents to deal more effectively with stress and pressure and to become resilient.
Topics to be discussed include: why some children, more than others, from birth, have a more difficult time developing a positive self-image and becoming resilient; the importance of identifying and reinforcing each child’s "islands of competence"; the significance of unconditional love; specific strategies for fostering self-esteem, self-discipline, responsibility, caring, hope, and resilience in children and adolescents.
Tickets are $5 and can be ordered by calling the Hopewell Valley Municipal Alliance, 737-0605, ext. 642, or by downloading a form from the Hopewell Valley Regional School District Web site.
This event is cosponsored by the school district, the Hopewell Valley Municipal Alliance, the Mercer County Traumatic Loss Coalition, Pennington Day and Hopewell Harvest Fair community grants.
